Netflix has acquired Desert Dolphin


As a major development for the skateboarding scene in india, Netflix has bought the global rights to distribute the movie Desert Dolphin. The story follows Prerna, a teenager from a rural village of India, who is introduced to skateboarding and has to fight the odds to follow her dreams and compete in the national championship. Skateboarding, a medal event at the coming TOKYO 2021 Olympic Games, has been the subject of the movie “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (if you’re a girl)”, which won OSCAR for the best short-subject movie. is the story of young Afghan girls learning to read, write-and skateboard-in Kabul.

Rachel Saanchita Gupta and Shafin Patel will make their acting debut alongside Amrit Maghera (Hollyoaks) and legendary Indian actor Waheeda Rehman. Manjari Makijany makes her feature directorial debut with the movie that she co-wrote with her sister Vinati Makijany. Emmanuel Pappas produced with Vinati and Manjari, with Michael Pellico as the executive producer.

Skateboarders from Pune, kovalam featured in the movie for body doubles and stunt associates. Shubham Surana who participated in World Roller Games (2019 Barcelona) Featured in the movie as the stunt double for the heroine of the movie.

Desert Dolphin Skatepark — located in a remote cluster of rural villages in Khempur-Mavli district — was constructed for the film with the support of Indian and international volunteers. The skatepark remains free for public use and is one of India’s largest skatepark.

Netflix is planning a 2021 debut for the movie, a Hindi-/English-language hybrid.
